4U2Read:Series

Description

4U2Read, a marvellous fiction series of 25 books or so, consists of adaptations of some of the most popular titles in the Barrington Stoke catalogue. They are designed for children with an interest age of 9 – 12 but with a reading age of 7. All Barrington Stoke books are characterised by large-sized text, printed on cream or off-white paper (easier to read for those with dyslexia and other similar difficulties), lots of black and white illustrations, lively, appealing covers and written by great mainstream authors – eg Michael Morpurgo, Alan Durant, Malorie Blackman. Even though the writing is tailored to meet the needs of children who struggle with reading, the stories move along at a real pace, with a flow to the language. For example, Fox Friend by Michael Morpurgo explores the relationship between a girl, Claire, and a fox cub she rescues but also looks at the argument for and against fox hunting. Looking For Billie by Rosie Rushton tells the story of a girl, Billie, in foster care. As she struggles to learn more about herself she realises that knowing where you come from is perhaps not as important as knowing where you’re going.   In Friday Forever by Annie Dalton, Lenny has just had one of the worst Fridays ever. Thank goodness it’s Saturday tomorrow…but when he wakes up, oh no, it’s Friday all over again! Photocopiable resources available to accompany some of the titles.
