Apple Pie ABC

By  Alison Murray

The story takes the reader through the alphabet letter by letter, as the dog attempts to get the pie and his owner attempts to stop him. The vocabulary is accessible yet exciting and the problematic letters of X and Z are handled well. It's ideal for little ones learning the alphabet but the story unfolds in such a way that it should hold their interest in its own right. The illustrations are what makes this picture book stand out, however, as they are truly gorgeous. They have a 1950s style but feel traditional rather than outdated. They are bold but at the same time minimalist and support the text perfectly in telling the story. This feels as if it could become a classic.
