Building Blocks

Description

It is not easy to create activities in a written format for such a young age group, but the experienced practitioners who have created this comprehensive resource, have been successful in providing a wealth of imaginative activities for those working with children at the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). There are 3 sets of building blocks (or modules) for 2-3 year olds, and 7 aimed at 4-5 year olds. All the activities are matched to the revised EYFS Framework and are designed to fit into a folder, one for each age group. The modules can be purchased separately or as whole sets.

The 3 modules for the younger age group are based on: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication and Language; and Physical Development. Each of these elements has 3 themes. For instance, Communication and Language is subdivided into: What’s that sound?
My favourite things and Story time. In the first of these, there are ideas for using farm animals, different bells, types of transport, a variety of shoes, toy telephones, noisy books and items from a play kitchen.

The 7 modules for older children cover the 7 areas of learning of the EYFS. The one for  Communication and Language has 6 units, with titles as varied as: Are all monsters scary? How do you make a chocolate crispy cake? and What’s inside the box? In the first of these, there are ideas for how to make a papier mache monster egg, a monster den in the classroom, monster rhymes and making up a monster story.

As well as containing a wide variety of activities on each theme, each unit includes links to additional resources, pupil profile sheets and further ideas for progressing on to the next stage. For the 4-5 year old age group, this includes extension activities for those who are nearly ready to move on to key stage 1. There are also photocopiable pages for each unit called ‘Hints for home’, which give ideas for parents and carers on how to continue learning about the same themes.

Once purchased, this resource would provide hours and hours of entertaining activities that are likely to engage young learners. The carefully constructed material and the amount that has been packed in to each building block, would makes it a very attractive purchase for busy practitioners.
