Horrible Histories: Series

Description

by Terry Deary

What can one say about this amazingly popular series – except keep them coming! The Horrible titles are brilliant books with a wide appeal. Challenging enough for confident readers and yet the subject matter and short, bite sized chunks of information plus plenty of lively, humourous black and white illustrations, speech bubbles, jokes and puns can really encourage and entice reluctant readers. If you want a foul fact or a gory story, these are the books for you! Stage versions and now a popular TV series have brought the Horribles to the notice of more children and given them valuable street cred. A wealth of titles from The Vicious Vikings, through the Terrifying Tudors, via the Vile Victorians to the Woeful Second World War there is a book for just about every era. The Horrible series is constantly expanding with new titles such as Terrible Trenches and reissues such as The Ruthless Romans being added all the time. There are now activity books and shortly to come full-colour large paperbacks. In addition, there are two further ‘Horrible’ series: Horrible Geography by Anita Ganeri illustrated by Mike Philips; and Horrible Science

by Nick Arnold illustrated by Tony de Saulles. Although these books are great fun, they are full of useful information and insight. They complement more conventional learning materials and offer a great way into a subject for those children who may otherwise struggle.
