My Uncle’s Dunkirk

This poignant book by Mick Manning is dedicated to his uncle, who was a soldier in the Second World War, but who never spoke of his experiences.  Beautifully illustrated by Brita Granstrom, it has been written in association with the Imperial War Museum. The author writes of his carefree holidays at the seaside with his uncle and aunt, contrasting his experiences with those of his uncle. This remarkable book, whose authenticity is increased by reproducing souvenirs that the uncle kept of his days in the army (such as Post Office Telegrams and  his Soldier’s Pay Book), succeeds in bringing the past alive to pupils across the age ranges.
