The Bex Factor

Description

by Simon Packham

On the surface, this appears a light-hearted look at fame and 'TV reality shows' but it is so much more. Bex wants to sing; she wants to enter The Tingle Factor but needs someone to accompany her musically. Matthew is a budding singer-songwriter who played guitar in the school concert. She's from the local estate; he's from the more upmarket end of town. She has a large, ramshackle, loud but loving family; his father has left and his mother suffers from depression and is in a wheelchair. They wouldn't normally hang out together but then Bex is desperate for his musical talent and persuades him to enter the talent show with her. He does so reluctantly. The judges don't want Bex but they do want Matthew. Bex is hurt, angry and jealous. Matthew doesn't think he can take part in the contest anyway, because who would look after his mother? And he doesn't want anyone to know what his home-life is really like...Peopled with hugely funny characters - including the manipulative producer, Nikki Hardbody - that we can all recognise from any number of TV shows, the Bex Factor is both fun and thought-provoking and makes the reader re-assess what we really mean by 'success'. It should be equally appealing to both boys and girls as each chaper is told by Bex and Matthew in turn. And I love the reference to Mr Packham the 'slap head tutor' who 'claims he's a writer' and is 'earth-shatteringly boring'! A nice little send up of himself by the author? There are also downloadable teachers' notes, links to National Curriculum requirements, and some fun downloadable goodies such as book marks all available from the Piccadilly Press website.
