Wonder Goal: A Touch-To-See Book

Description

This well-known and much-loved book about a boy dreaming of kicking a wonder goal in the World Cup final has been adapted by Living Paintings to meet the needs of blind and partially sighted children. An innovative approach incorporating tactile images, Braille and an audio description CD brings this marvellous book to life for children who may not otherwise have a chance to enjoy it. The book starts and ends with tactile images of footballers so that children can 'feel' the characters. (They are lovely for sighted children to see and touch as well). The text is reproduced in Braille on clear plastic sheets and interleaved between the traditional print pages enabling the book to be shared and enjoyed equally by children with a visual impairment and sighted children. The accompanying audio description CD is beautifully scripted and spoken making it an enjoyable listening experience in itself. Football chants, crowd noise and a ref’s whistle indicating when to turn the page all add to the atmosphere. The second part of the audio CD describes Michael Foreman’s sketches of football being played in different world situations and introduces the various countries with their national anthems or evocative music! It’s great to see a mainstream book being adapted in this way to make it accessible to all.

You can borrow this book from Living Paintings free national postal library of Touch to See books.
